Ashikaga Yoshiteru is a new non-playable character featured in Sengoku BASARA 4. The 13th Ashikaga shogun who longs for heated battles. He relinquishes the shogun rule back to the heavens, which in turn causes the Sengoku Genesis.
Description
Yoshiteru is, for the former shogun of the country, surprisingly hot-blooded. Besides wanting to put the next generation of warriors to the test and see if they're worthy of taking his place, Yoshiteru also sparked off the Sengoku Genesis out of boredom - being a battle-loving man who is undefeated by the events of 4, he wished to find someone who was capable of giving him a challenge. On top of being incredbly strong, Yoshiteru is also a genius who is capable of outsmarting the likes of even Motonari . He can read the thoughts and feelings of everyone he comes across by just looking at them, which can unnerve many who encounter him. He's proven to be a kind and very respectful person, referring to everyone he meets as 'comrade', even if he only gets hostility in return. It is because of these qualities that there are those who wish to serve him, whether it is because they believe he is what the country needs (such as Kenshin ) or because he's simply a very interesting individual (in the case of Hisahide ).
Despite being a god-like existence in the series, Yoshiteru has a deep-seated feeling of isolation because of his position as the shogun, believing that all it is is a title that he was born with and, in the end, he's just a human like any other commoner. Being raised as royalty, he doesn't know much about how commoners live, but he makes an effort to try and learn himself.
Role in Games
Sengoku BASARA 4
Yoshiteru has a prominent role in the game, being the one who set 4's events into motion. He appears in multiple drama routes as the last boss for the character in question, and is likely the hardest boss in the game.
It's revealed in Katsuie's anime route that Yoshiteru was the one who convinced Katsuie to rebel against Nobunaga, and even lent him his army to assist him in doing so. When Katsuie confronts him and blames him for ruining his life, Yoshiteru pities his situation as he didn't think that he would end up the way he did, and only wanted to give Katsuie a chance to change. Yoshiteru defeats Katsuie, who asks him to end him, and Yoshiteru tells him to walk down a new path in a new world before cutting him down.
Yoshiteru's largest role, however, is in Keiji's drama route. After finally moving on from his past with Hideyoshi, Keiji goes to meet him per Kenshin's wishes at the Remains Of Ōnin, and as he has encounters with Tsuruhime, Motonari and finally Kenshin, he starts to learn more about Yoshiteru himself - the fact that he has much power and intelligence, but is really lonely and lacks a bond like what Kenshin has with Shingen or Kasuga. When they finally meet in person, Yoshiteru asks Keiji why his heart is so clouded, with Keiji asking him why 'friend' sounds so sad when he says it. When Keiji goes on to say that he understands his sadness because he lost a friend in Hideyoshi, Yoshiteru becomes filled with rage for a moment and attacks Keiji, who blocks it just in time. Yoshiteru tells him that there's no need to apologize, and goes on to talk about what he thinks a friend is - to him, anyone who he calls a friend deserves to be one, but he already has a feeling that the definition of a friend is different to Keiji than it is to him. Yoshiteru finally asks if friends are supposed to feel the bleakness that Keiji feels in his heart, to which he is left speechless when Keiji tells him that if he can see straight through to his heart, then he must know that he and Keiji feel the same - wanting the 'friendship' that they've both been longing for. Their fight comes to an end when Keiji disarms him and tells him that he used to fight with Hideyoshi like this all the time. Yoshiteru openly tells him that he's envious of that, and asks Keiji if he could accompany him too before running in for a punch. Keiji throws his sword in the air and takes the blow to Yoshiteru's shock, and tells him that he's decided never to avert his eyes from his friends again...before his sword drops back down and lands on their heads. After bursing into laugher, Yoshiteru realizes that he's made his first true friend in Keiji and decides to accompany him to build on their newly-forged bond.

Ashikaga Yoshiteru (足利義輝) was the 13th shogun of the Ashikaga shogunate who reigned from 1546 to 1565 during the late Muromachi period of Japan. He was the eldest son of the 12th shogun, Ashikaga Yoshiharu; and his mother was a daughter of Konoe Taneie, Keijuin. Because of his inner strength and the katana skills that he was known to have practiced regularly, Yoshiteru was called the "Sword Shogun" and was closer to being a samurai and a warlord than any shogun since Ashikaga Takauji. His governance was highly credited but to have been killed in spite of his efforts completely destroyed what little recognition and authority Yoshiteru built up.
Yoshiteru had barely been confirmed as shogun when his father Ashikaga Yoshiharu made a truce with Harumoto in order to return to Kyoto. Yet, Harumoto's retainer Miyoshi Nagayoshi parted with Harumoto to take the side of Hosokawa Ujitsuna and the two Hosokawa started a war that drove out Yoshiteru, his father Yoshiharu, and Harumoto as well, from Kyoto. In 1550, Yoshiharu died in Ōmi, unable to return to Kyoto.
In 1552, Yoshiteru made a peace with Miyoshi Nagayoshi to return to Kyoto. However, the next year, Yoshiteru and Harumoto started a war against Nagayoshi to remove his influence. With the help of Rokkaku Yoshikata, the war initially went well for Yoshiteru but he was driven out of Kyoto again in 1558 with a counterattack from Nagayoshi. Nagayoshi did not press on after the victory to kill Yoshiteru for fear of being accused of killing a shogun, and instead signed a truce to have Yoshiteru back in Kyoto under his influence. Nagayoshi continued as the real power in Kyoto, with Yoshiteru nothing more than a rubber stamp.
In 1564, Nagayoshi died of illness and Yoshiteru saw an opportunity to fully reclaim the shogun's authority. However, Matsunaga Hisahide and the three member council of Miyoshi, the Miyoshi Triumvirates, who wanted to rule just as Nagayoshi had, were willing to go to any lengths to remove Yoshiteru from the power and to have Ashikaga Yoshihide as the puppet shogun. In 1565, Hisahide, and Miyoshi Yoshitsugu laid siege against a collection of buildings (that would later become Nijo Castle) where Yoshiteru lived. With no help arriving in time from the daimyo that could have supported him, Yoshiteru and the few troops under him were overrun by Miyoshi.
