~オレは死を恐れねえ。。。だが死のうと思った事は一度もねえ。~
~I'm not afraid of death...but not once have I thought of dying.~

Kojūrō is a loyal retainer of Date Masamune, but also appears as a brotherly and mentor-like figure for the One-Eyed Dragon. Modeled after a typical yakuza-style gangster from the movies, his manner of speech, attitude towards his subordinates and even his secondary attack string clearly reflect this inspiration.

He makes an appearance in Sengoku BASARA 4 as a playable character. He is unlocked by completing Date Masamune's story. Completing his story will unlock Mogami Yoshiaki.

Description

Kojūrō values honor and loyalty above everything else: he was ready to be executed for the "sin" of turning his sword against his master (albeit for a just cause). Kojūrō has been hinted to be stronger than his master various times (many characters' lines when encountering him reflect this), and possibly he himself knows this; but he has unwavering faith in Masamune, despite the latter's young age and recklessness. In the One-Eyed Dragon he sees the future leader of Japan, and is determined to bring his master's ambition to fulfillment.

Gameplay

Kojūrō,fights using Katana, althou a bit longer than Masamune's have. Like his lord, Masamune, has two modes - his normal mode and his Slaughter mode. He have a mid-tier speed and attack range, althou a little bit better than his lord.

In his normal mode, Kojūrō's S-string consists of a series of vertical slashes followed up a few horizontal swipes, and ending with a powerful upward slash. All of his other attacks are comparable to Masamune including his skills (Kojūrō has skills very similar to Masamune's except Phantom Dive). The impact rate during 4th to above are greater than the first 3 attack.

In Slaughter mode, Kojūrō's S-String becomes stronger, quicker, covers slightly more area and does more hits Like Masamune's 6-sword mode, Kojūrō cannot guard or evade when this is active. This mode is activated by activating the effect of his personal item, holding the normal attack button for 5-15 seconds, using the skill Mudzuki Gokusatsu or as part of his story. Unlike Masamune's 6-sword mode, however, Kojūrō stays in this move even when hit or after using any of his other skills. He can only exit this mode after a certain amount of time has passed (unless triggered by his personal item or story event, though both can be overridden by using the other methods to activate this mode) or by reusing Mudzuki Gokusatsu. During Sengoku Basara 3 Utage, he cannot charge his Slaughter mode anymore by pressing regular attack button.

In Sengoku Basara 3 Utage and above, Kojūrō can easily chain almost all of his attacks into any other attack or skill. Kojūrō's skills can also be altered or extended by holding the skills's button (or button combination) similar to Hanbee's. These extended or altered skills use Kojūrō's other sword and deals more damage, but has a long recovery time if not canceled out of.

Additionally, his Basara attack is noticeably long. This allows players to fully charge his Slaugher mode (by holding the normal attack button) while being unstoppable in Sengoku Basara.

His personal item revives him once and puts him in Slaughter mode of the rest of the battle.

Historical Information

Hist12

Katakura Kojūrō

Katakura Kagetsuna (1557-December 4, 1615) was a Japanese samurai of the late Sengoku period. Also known by his court title, Bicchū no Kami (備中守), or more commonly, as Katakura Kojūrō. Together with Oniniwa Tsunamoto and Date Shigezane, Kagetsuna was known as one of the "Three Great Men of the Date Clan". The son of Yonezawa native Katakura Kagenaga (a Shinto priest turned samurai), he was famed for his role as a senior retainer under Date Masamune. He first served the Date clan as a junior page under Date Masamune's father Terumune. Then, on Endō Motonobu's recommendation, he became Masamune's personal attendant, and was heavily relied upon as a strategist. Kagetsuna would soon become deeply trusted by his lord, as the following anecdote illustrates: Masamune, in his first battle, suddenly found himself surrounded; he was only saved when Kagetsuna arrived on the scene shouting "I am Masamune!" (われこそが政宗なり; Ware koso ga Masamune nari), distracting the enemy long enough for Masamune to escape.

Kagetsuna fought in most of Masamune's major battles, including the Battle of Hitodoribashi in 1585, Kōriyama in 1588, Suriage ga Hara in 1589, Odawara in 1590, the Korean campaign in 1590, and Sekigahara in 1600. He also assisted in the Date clan's administrative duties, serving as castle warden of Nihonmatsu Castle, lord of Ōmori Castle, Watari Castle, and others. Kagetsuna played a key role in the survival of the Date clan in 1590, by recommending that Masamune submit to Toyotomi Hideyoshi during the Odawara Campaign. Following the Odawara Campaign, Hideyoshi granted Kagetsuna with the 50,000 koku fief of Tamura. This made Kagetsuna a daimyo in his own right; however, soon after taking possession of the fief, he returned it, in a show of loyalty to his master.

Two years after Sekigahara, when Masamune was made lord of Sendai, Kagetsuna was granted Shiroishi Castle (白石城 Shiroishi-jō), and a stipend of 13,000 koku. This was a special exception to the Tokugawa Shogunate's newly passed ikkoku ichijō (一国一城; "One Castle per Territory") rule. The Katakura clan, as senior retainers of the Sendai domain, would remain in Shiroishi as local lords for the next two centuries, spanning over 11 generations.

As Kagetsuna was ill, he was unable to join Masamune at the Osaka Winter Campaign of 1614, choosing to send his son Shigenaga in his stead. Kagetsuna died the following year at age 60, and was buried with the posthumous name of Sanzan Jōei (傑山常英). Upon Kagetsuna's death, six of his retainers were so deeply grieved that they committed junshi (殉死; suicide to follow one's lord in death).
